Mommy Makeover is a term used to encompass a variety of procedures to help moms get their pre-baby body back. Traditionally, a Mommy Makeover includes breast augmentation with lift, arm liposuction, tummy tuck, and more. However, the Modern Mommy Makeover can be tailored to fit the Modern Mommy’s needs.
Women are more open about other issues they have experienced after childbirth, specifically vaginal issues or changes in fat distribution in their hip and buttock areas. Dr. Cox individualizes each Mommy Makeover to fit all the needs of the modern mom.

What is a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy Makeover is a collection of procedures typically performed after a woman is done having children and ready to do something for herself to get her pre-childbearing body back. While diet and exercise are very important for a healthy, active mother, we understand not everything that changes after pregnancy can be fixed at the gym or by dieting.

What Does a Mommy Makeover Include?

The following are the areas our mothers typically discuss during their Mommy Makeover consultations.

Breasts undergo significant changes with pregnancy and even greater changes with breastfeeding. Hormones often cause breast enlargement and loosen the ligaments that keep the breasts high and perky on the chest wall. With breastfeeding, the constant engorgement and deflation of the breast as well as the forces created by a nursing infant exacerbate the changes already made by pregnancy. Many women complain that their breasts feel saggy and deflated after children. Others experience breast enlargement that does not go away after pregnancy and contributes to neck, back, and shoulder pain.

Many women also deal with enlarged nipples and areolas. Breast lift, breast reduction, breast augmentation, or a combination of these can help give women back the perky breasts they had prior to pregnancy. During breast lift or reduction, the nipple and areola can also be reduced for a more proportional look. A variety of techniques can be used to help get you the results you desire. Dr. Cox will discuss your options with you to develop a plan to get you the look you want.

Many women experience stretch marks, loose skin, and extra fat in their lower abdomen after pregnancy. Additionally, some women suffer from muscle separation in their abdomen called rectus diastasis after pregnancy, which can affect your core strength, significantly taking away your core strength and leaving you with a “poochy” looking tummy. Making matters worse, women who have undergone C-sections often have poorly healed scars that tether the lower abdominal skin creating even more of a “pooch” look.

Unfortunately, exercises usually do not work to repair rectus diastasis, and many women say that no matter how much they diet and exercise, they cannot lose this excess skin and fat of the lower abdomen. Abdominoplasty is a procedure that removes the excess skin and fat of the lower abdomen and repairs the muscles that have been separated during pregnancy. Old C-section scars are removed in the process and liposuction is often performed to accentuate your hourglass figure and help smooth problem areas.

Working out regularly and dieting can be extremely difficult after having children. Your time and energy are mostly spent on your children, and you hardly have time for yourself. Cox Cosmetic Surgery is very passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles of eating well and remaining active, but we understand that maintaining the perfect body after having children is incredibly difficult. Dr. Cox can help you contour your problem areas with liposuction to help you restore your pre-baby body.

Buttock and Hip

Some women experience changes to their hip and buttock area after children. Some women lose volume or sag in these areas. A lower body lift or Brazilian Butt Lift may be able to give you more of an hourglass figure or lift your hip and buttock back to where it was pre-baby.

Vaginal Rejuvenation

So many women experience problems in these areas, but until recently, it was never talked about. Many women experience genitourinary incontinence after childbirth and lose urine when coughing, sneezing, jumping, exercising, or even walking. Additionally, some women have vaginal laxity due to separation of the pelvic muscles or nerve damage that occurs during pregnancy or childbirth. This can contribute to decreased sexual satisfaction or other embarrassing symptoms. Vaginoplasty can help with some of these symptoms and can be combined with labiaplasty to improve the appearance and function of the genital region.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mommy Makeovers

How long will it take me to recover?

This is the most common question we get from our patients who want a Mommy Makeover. Moms are typically the core of the family unit, and we understand that mom being out of commission takes a toll on the family. Although a return to activity greatly depends on your specific procedure, most patients are unable to do most caregiving activities for 48 hours. After this, moms return to “light mom duty.” These activities include picking up children from a seated position, preparing small meals, taking light strolls around the block, and light household duties.

Most patients are ready to return to work in two to three weeks and return to most day-to-day activities by this time. After six weeks, you can return to full activities, including picking children up from standing and full exercise.

This being said, the more help you have, the better! Having a dad, grandparents, or a nanny help while you are recovering is incredibly helpful and decreases stress while you recover.

Should I wait to finish my family before I get a Mommy Makeover?

Yes. Although some procedures can be performed to improve your appearance in between children, a full Mommy Makeover is best performed after your family is complete. Additional pregnancies can cause recurrence of breast, abdominal and vaginal laxity and compromise your results. Revisionary surgeries are often more difficult and may result in less than optimal results.

How long after pregnancy do I have to wait to get a Mommy Makeover?

You should wait until you are mentally and physically ready to undergo a Mommy Makeover. You should be at a stable post-baby weight. Gaining or losing a significant amount of weight after your Mommy Makeover can negatively affect your results. Additionally, if you are having any breast surgery, we recommend waiting at least three months after you finish lactating.

Many moms, especially early after pregnancy, deal with a lot of “mom guilt.” You need to be in the right mindset prior to having your Mommy Makeover to optimize your recovery and the well-being of yourself and your family. You need to be ready to do something good for yourself and your self-esteem. A happy, confident mommy is a crucial part of a happy family!
