What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that involves placing a saline or silicone implant to enhance breast size. Although breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed procedures in Dallas, TX, the procedure should be individualized for each patient.

You and your plastic surgeon will make key decisions to help you achieve your desired look. These aspects include:

  • Type of implant (saline or silicone)
  • Size of implant
  • Structure of implant (surface/shape of the implant)
  • Type of breast incision used
  • Placement of the breast implant
  • Creation of the breast pocket

It is important to note that while breast augmentation can enhance the size and shape of your breast, it cannot significantly lift your breast or relieve breast pain. If you have significant sagging of your breast due to age, pregnancy, nursing, or weight loss, you may require a breast lift with or without breast augmentation to achieve your desired look.

Reasons to Consider Breast Augmentation Surgery in Dallas, TX

Size

Most women in Dallas choose to have breast augmentation to increase breast size. Whether you want to fill out clothing and swimsuits better or if you want to feel more confident unclothed, breast augmentation can help you achieve the figure you desire.

Breast implants are typically measured in cubic centimeters or cc’s. In general, 100-200 cc’s will enhance your breast by approximately one cup size. However, not all bra cup sizes are created equal. A bra size at one retailer may be different than brands found at other department stores. When determining breast implant size during breast augmentation consultation, you should describe to Dr. Cox the look you are trying to achieve, so they can help guide you to find the best breast augmentation size for you.

During your consultation, Dr. Cox will work with you to choose a breast implant size that achieves your breast enhancement goals and best fits your anatomy. We encourage you to bring a swimsuit top, nice dresses, and T-shirts to try on different breast implant sizes during your consultation to find the best size for you.

Asymmetry

If your breasts are asymmetric, you are not alone. Most patients have some form of breast asymmetry. If you find that your breast asymmetry causes you to constantly pad your bra, feel self-conscious in dresses or bathing suits, or make it difficult to fit in clothes, breast augmentation can help.

After Pregnancy

Breast augmentation is a common part of a Mommy Makeover. Many women who have had children, especially those who have nursed, experience significant deflation of their breast tissue. This can lead healthy, beautiful, and active women to feel embarrassed and self-conscious in clothing or with their partners. Breast augmentation can help restore the volume lost after pregnancy or breastfeeding and help give a subtle lift to the breast.

It is important to note that if your breasts experienced more significant sagging after pregnancy, which is very common, you may be a better candidate for a breast lift (mastopexy) with or without breast augmentation. Our Cox Cosmetic Surgery plastic surgeon will personally discuss these options with you and provide a procedure that will fit your specific goals.

After Weight Loss

Cox Cosmetic Surgery is a huge advocate of healthy lifestyles in Dallas, TX. We are incredibly proud of our patients who achieve and sustain significant weight loss. Unfortunately, one area that women often don’t want to lose, but tend to lose first, is in the breast area. Weight loss can lead to smaller, deflated breasts. Breast augmentation can help improve the shape and size of your breasts for a more aesthetic appearance that is in proportion to your new body.

It is important to note that after significant weight loss, it is very common to experience more significant breast sagging, which makes you a better candidate for a breast lift (mastopexy) with or without breast augmentation. Your Cox Cosmetic Surgery plastic surgeon will personally discuss these options with you and provide a breast procedure that will fit your specific goals.

Breast Shape

Some patients suffer from a condition called tuberous breast syndrome, in which patients have very narrowed, small, sagging breasts that appear misshapen. We specialize in breast augmentation for these types of patients, creating a rounder, fuller, more feminine appearance.

What to Expect When Recovering From Breast Augmentation Surgery

After your breast augmentation, you will be placed in a surgical wrap or surgical bra. You will have a light dressing covering the incision. Mild swelling is typical after surgery. You may shower 24 hours after the procedure.

Dr. Cox employs a multimodal pain regimen to decrease or eliminate your need for narcotic pain medication, which allows our patients to recover quickly and feel more like themselves soon after surgery. Most of our patients are ready to go back to work within a week.

Dr. Cox and cosmetic surgery staff in Dallas will communicate with you following the procedure to ensure proper healing. Most of the swelling begins to subside over the first week or two and typically resolves by 4-6 weeks. We advise that you refrain from strenuous activity or heavy lifting greater than 10 pounds for 4-6 weeks.

Breast Augmentation Frequently Asked Questions

Should I Get Saline Or Silicone?

The question of saline vs. silicone really comes down to patient and surgeon preference. There is no solid data indicating one type of implant is superior to the other. Your surgeon can discuss the upsides and downsides of each implant and their particular preferences.

Should I Get My Implants Above Or Below the Muscle?

This is also a question of surgeon preference. There are certain indications to place the implant above or below the muscle that your surgeon can discuss with you on an individual basis.

What Incision Or Approach do You Recommend?

Dr. Cox most commonly performs breast augmentation through a well-hidden incision under the breast fold. In certain circumstances or because of patient preference, the surgeon may use an incision around the nipple. However, plastic surgery literature does state that the use of incisions around the nipple comes with an increased risk of capsular contracture (firm scarring around the implant.) Dr. Cox rarely will place implants through an incision in the axilla.

How Can I Tell if My Implant Is Ruptured?

With saline implants, your implant will lose volume over time and eventually will completely deflate, resulting in breast asymmetry. For silicone implants, it is nearly impossible to detect a rupture in a modern implant with the naked eye. Occasionally, a ruptured implant will result in increased scar tissue or capsular contracture. However, most implant ruptures go unnoticed.

MRI is the gold standard for determining implant rupture, and it is recommended to undergo an MRI three years after initial implant placement and every two years thereafter. An ultrasound can also be used to determine implant rupture.

What Happens if My Implant Ruptures?

If your implant is ruptured, Dr. Cox recommends exchanging it for a new implant. Although they do not recommend keeping a ruptured implant in place for a long period of time, implant ruptures are not surgical emergencies. Therefore, an implant exchange procedure can be scheduled on an elective basis.

Can I Breastfeed With Implants?

There have been no studies that indicate implants impair the ability to breastfeed, and many women with implants successfully breastfeed.

Does Silicone Cause Cancer Or Any Autoimmune Diseases?

There have been no studies linking breast implants to autoimmune disease or breast cancer.

Why Do Some Augmented Breasts Look Closer Together Or Further Apart?

When performing breast augmentation, Dr. Cox does his best to “respect your anatomy.” This means that precise measurements and markings are made as well as precise surgical techniques to avoid issues like symmastia, which is the breasts being too close together and looking as if they are one breast. This is what the public often refers to as “uni-boob”. Dr. Cox has experience with fixing these very difficult revision breast surgery procedures and an appointment can be made to discuss corrective breast surgery.

Sometimes, breasts can appear closer together or farther apart due to your chest wall anatomy. While Dr. Cox cannot change your chest wall anatomy, fat grafting can sometimes be performed to help correct these issues.

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost at Cox Cosmetic Surgery in Dallas, TX?

Breast augmentation prices vary on the type of implant used and with any revision breast augmentation procedures. Breast augmentation typically ranges between $6,200 and $7,500.

*Costs include facility fees, anesthesia fees, surgeon fees, specialized plastic surgery garments, implants, and other required supplies such as the Keller funnel, abdominal boards, binders (if needed), and all postoperative visits.
