What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction surgically removes fat cells from the body to create a slimmer, sleeker contour. Liposuction can be used for generalized fat removal to decrease your overall waistline, hips, and thighs or can be used to target specific problem areas that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Dr. Joshua Cox, the plastic surgeon at Cox Cosmetic Surgery in Dallas, Texas, performs safe and effective liposuction techniques to loosen, emulsify, and remove unwanted fat deposits. The procedure begins with several small incisions in strategic areas to remove the fat precisely and efficiently. Your Dallas plastic surgeon performing the liposuction procedure will then inject a tumescent solution, which is a mixture of saline, a medication that decreases bleeding, and a local anesthetic to decrease postoperative pain. A cannula will then be used to break up the fat deposits for gentle removal. Once the fat has been effectively removed, the remaining fat cells are equalized to ensure excellent contour and symmetry.

The top areas in which liposuction is performed are the abdomen, hips, lower back (flanks), upper back, bra line, inner thighs, outer thighs, knees, arms, and neck. After fat removal, the fat can either be discarded or washed and injected into other areas of the body to improve volume and contours (for example, in the buttock and hip area.)

Large-volume liposuction, aggressive liposuction, or liposuction of multiple areas is best performed under general anesthesia; however, liposuction of some areas may be performed under local anesthesia, which can be a safer, quicker, and more cost-effective option.

Why Get Liposuction?

Do you have stubborn areas that won’t slim down no matter how much you diet and exercise? Do you need a kickstart after letting yourself go for a while? Do you find your body shape to be disproportionate, making it difficult to find clothing that fits well? Do you have a double chin that just won’t go away, making you feel overweight and unattractive?

Liposuction may be able to help! Liposuction permanently removes fatty deposits from problem areas to give you a better overall look and contour with only a few small, unnoticeable scars. In the hands of Dr. Cox, surgical liposuction is the most well-studied, reliable, and predictable form of liposuction and fat removal and is by far the preference of our surgical team.

Hips

If you have excess fat in your hips/flanks/love handles, liposuction can help sculpt this area for a narrower, more contoured appearance. This can really help cinch in your waist and give you that hourglass look.

Thighs

Dr. Cox can perform liposuction of both the inner thighs and outer thighs as well as liposuction of the back or posterior thigh or “banana roll.” Liposuction of the inner thighs can help give you a thigh gap and more contoured, muscular appearing legs.

Knee

Surprising to many people, Dr. Cox commonly perform liposuction to the knees in our Dallas patients to help smooth the lower leg contour and help the fat bulge above the knee that commonly occurs with weight gain and age.

Lower Back

Dr. Cox can perform aggressive liposuction of the back to help improve back fat and back rolls. This is critical to creating a smooth contour and can be a complete game-changer for some of our patients. The back is truly one of the areas of liposuction that experiences the most dramatic results.

Upper Back/Bra Line

Upper back or bra line liposuction is often essential to completing the look of lower back or 360 Circumferential Liposuction. This will help remove upper back rolls and smooth back contour. Dr. Cox commonly recommends upper back or bra line liposuction as an adjunct to breast reduction surgery to help improve the contour and transition from the back to the breast area. Our goal is to create a smooth, slimline silhouette.

Arms

Liposuction of the arms is commonly performed to decrease fat from the arm area. Dr. Cox also performs liposuction routinely as part of a Brachioplasty or arm lift.

Neck

Liposuction of the neck can be a powerful procedure that really sculpts the jaw and neckline, giving a better angle between the neck and the chin. This procedure can be performed in the operating room as well as in the clinic by Dr. Cox.

What to Expect from Liposuction in Dallas, Texas

Surgical liposuction should be performed by a fully-trained plastic surgeon who follows the utmost quality and safety standards to ensure a safe, effective result. Your plastic surgeon should pay meticulous attention to detail to make your result as smooth and symmetric as possible. Cox Cosmetic Surgery has these qualities.

Procedures Often Performed Along With 360 Liposuction

Tummy Tuck/Abdominoplasty

Combining aggressive liposuction of the back, flanks, and hips along with tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can give a dramatic 360-degree contouring result, often without the need for a circumferential body lift, which requires a large incision across the back. 360 Liposuction smoothes-out back rolls and bra line excess without big incisions, creating an hourglass look without scarring. The 360 liposuction and tummy tuck procedure also results in lower postoperative pain and an easier recovery than a circumferential body lift.

Brazilian Butt Lift

Liposuction is commonly performed as part of a Brazilian Butt Lift, which uses the fat harvested from liposuction to inject into the buttock area for a curvy, voluptuous contour. When performed correctly, liposuction of the waist and back even further accentuates the curves of the hip and buttock area with a cinched-in waist and hourglass aesthetic.

Breast Reduction and Breast Reconstruction

After breast reduction or breast reconstruction, the volume of the breast is often decreased, and attachments of the breast to the axillary or underarm area have been affected. This often results in the fatty area under the axilla in the bra-line area becoming more prominent and bothersome. Dr. Cox prefers to perform liposuction of this transition area to smooth the contour and improve the overall aesthetic and functional result.

Mommy Makeover

Let’s be honest, finding time to exercise and diet can be difficult when raising a family. Dr. Cox routinely performs liposuction as part of a Mommy Makeover to help in the areas most mommies have trouble with, like the abdomen, hips, and thighs.

Arm Lift or Brachioplasty

360 Liposuction is commonly performed along with an arm lift to help with contouring and removal of some of the excess fat.

Thigh Lift

Dr. Cox commonly uses 360 liposuction as part of a thigh lift to improve contour and help remove excess fat.

Recovery After 360 Liposuction

After your liposuction procedure, you will have a surgical dressing that covers the small incisions used to liposuction the fat from the areas. It is normal for you to have some leftover fluid that drains from these areas and the liposuction dressings may require changing or reinforcing the night after your liposuction procedure. You will also be placed into a garment after liposuction surgery to help improve the contour and decrease bruising and swelling. Additionally, special liposuction foam may be placed to decrease swelling and bruising and improve contour and definition. You will be advised to refrain from strenuous activity for two to four weeks during the healing process.

Cox Cosmetic Surgery expects some swelling and bruising for up to a few weeks after the procedure, and mild swelling may remain for months after liposuction. If you are otherwise healthy and had less than five liters of liposuction performed, it is typically safe for you to go home the day of the procedure. If you underwent additional procedures or had greater than five liters of liposuction performed, your Cox Cosmetic Surgery plastic surgeon may recommend that you stay overnight in the hospital or surgical facility.
